One of several ancient and powerful families (clans, actually) in Rome. These families had gotten into the habit of having one of their number, in turn, serving as Pope. This system fell apart early in the 14th century, leading to the election of a French pope, the exile of the papacy to Avignon and the subsequent Great Schism.
