There were major differences between lifestyles in Europe and the areas from Greece eastward. The Greek custom was to segregate women from the men. The Middle Eastern nations, particularly after the Moslem conquest, adopted the similar Arab custom of keeping men and women apart, except for the immediate family. Whenever men from outside the family came to visit, the women were confined to the "women's quarters." Wealthy men would have a harem, where wives, slave concubines and young children would live, never to mingle with any man but the one they were married to, or owned them. Nothing like this was found in the West.
