The Episcopate

The senior clergy that supervised the day to day administration of Church affairs were the bishops and archbishops. In other words, the Episcopate (From the Latin word for the community of bishops; episcopatus.) The archbishops were the senior administrators of the church. Within an area (archdiocese) designated an archbishopric, there would be many smaller areas (dioceses) that bishops presided over. Think of the pope as the "king," the archbishops as the "dukes," the bishops as the "counts," and the local parishes as the smallest domains and you've got a good idea of how it worked. The Medieval church had actually adopted most of their administrative structure from the late Roman Empire. The pope was the "emperor" and had a large staff to assist him. The archbishops "ruled" the "provinces" and the bishops administered the smaller areas within a province. The archbishops and their organizations were referred to as the Episcopate.

Note that in the 14th century, the cardinals served as part of the pope's personal court. It was only later that the archbishoprics were headed by cardinals. Even today, cardinal is a rank, while archbishopric is an official post within the church hierarchy.
