The United States, with fifty states, has fifty different (usually in small ways) legal systems. With one exception, they are based on English Common Law. This is a legal system that owes more to German tribal customs than to the ancient Roman legal system. One state, Loisiana, because it was once a French colony, still uses a form of French law, which is based more explicitly on the ancient Roman law.
