It's a rare term used in the Catholic church that did not come from the Romans. For example, one of the later reorganizations of the empire divided territory into dioceases, each administered by a vicari. Earlier subdivisions were called conventus. Nowhere did the Latin organization and Roman practices survive than in the Roman Catholic church.
