Family Names for the leaders of the three Italian Republics
Given names are not really a problem as any Italian name would do. But family names differ. The constitutional set-up in Venice made it much less likely that the republic would become dominated by one family, which was the fate of Genoa and Florence, as shown by the number of names available.
Normally one became the head of a republic much the same one became the Pope, so the same formula would work.
