Comments: Franche-Comte, often known as the 'Free County of Burgundy,' was originally part of the ancient Kingdom of the Burgundians (see the French Duchy of Burgundy ), but by the 11th century had fallen under the suzerainty of the Holy Roman Empire, which it still enjoys. The area is mountainous, but fertile, and prospers because of the numerous trade routes and relatively large towns.
