Comments: Saintonge is a large county on the Bay of Biscay. Originally a part of the Aquitaine, its history is one with that of Gascony and Guyenne, passing under English rule in 1154, under which it remains. The county is part of the Archiepiscopal province of Bordeaux. There is fair amount of commerce here, notably shipping, and some manufacturing. The province is fertile, producing grains and a wines.
