Comments: Tours, sometimes known as the Touraine, is a large county in west central France, about 125 miles southwest of Paris. Originally part of Gallia Lugdunensis, it was one of the last areas in which Roman authority held out, until nearly the end of the 5th century, when it was overrun by the Franks under Clovis, and incorporated into their kingdom.

In 732 the Saracenic onslaught out of Spain was halted near the town of Tours. The line of counts was established in Carolingian times, but the title escheated to the Crown centuries ago.

Ecclesiastical authority is vested in the Archbishop of Tours. Although there is some manufacturing and commerce in Tours proper, the province is primarily agricultural.
