The religious turmoil that would eventually develop into the Protestant Reformation had its beginnings during this period. There arose several heresies, which caused rebellions and civil war. If a group of fiefs went heretic, the lord of those fiefs had to pillage his own lands in order to restore respect for the Catholic Church. Low morale and poverty resulted for some time.
