Vassals may be required to go, once a year, to their overlord to "pay homage" and reaffirm their oath of fealty (loyalty). This was often waived, but just as frequently a troublesome vassal was called to pay homage to either hassle the vassal and/or keep an eye on him. Sometimes a nervous vassal, fearing assassination or imprisonment, would refuse and war could result.
