Notes: His Grace, Doge Francesco, is of the noblest blood the Serenissima has to offer, his house going back into the dimmest ages of the Republic, its greatest earlier member being that Enrico who, as Doge in the early 13th century, successfully plotted the capture of Constantinople. Before being elected Doge in 1329, Don Francesco had served variously as Governor of Negroponte, in the Aegean; as commander of the fleet and army which captured Ceos and Serife from the Byzantines; and in numerous other capacities. Although advanced in years, the Doge is fit and vigorous, and has embarked upon a policy of improving the Republic's foothold on the Italian mainland.
