Comments: Bearn (pronounced 'barn') is a viscounty in southeastern France, hard by the Pyrenees up against Gascony. It first develops a distinctive history in the 6th century, when it was conquered by Basques northwards from Spain. Eventually passing to the control of Aquitaine in the 9th century, the viscounty became virtually independent during the 11th century, a situation which has not changed, as it is a fief of the powerful Counts of Foix . Ecclesiastical authority is vested in the Archbishop of Auch .
