Comments: Berry was the ancient home of the Bituriges, subdued by the Romans in the first century B.C. For long centuries a prosperous part of the Roman Empire, in the 5th century the region was overrun by the Franks and incorporated into their kingdom. Ecclesiastical authority is vested in the Archbishop of Bourges , who resides in the comital capital. There is a little commerce and some manufacturing in the larger towns, but the province is primarily agricultural in character.
