Comments: Forez is a large county in southwestern France, up against the Arelate. In Roman times portions of the present county were part of the provinces of Narbonensis, Aqutainia, and Lugdunensis. Overrun by Visigoths, Burgundians, and finally Franks, the ownership of the area was confirmed to France in the final division of the Carolingian Empire in the 9th century. The county is under the religious authority of the Archbishop of Lyon. There is little commerce here, but it is a fertile land.
