Comments: Lyon is one of the most ancient cities in France. A Gallic establishment known to the Romans as Lugdunum, Julius Caesar made it the capital of one of the provinces of Gaul, and for centuries it flourished as the largest city in Europe north and west of Rome. On the fall of Rome it was for a time incorporated into the Burgundian Kingdom, and later came under Frankish rule.
After the partition of the Carolingian Empire it became part of the Holy Roman Empire, until it passed to France in 1307. Ecclesiastical authority is vested in the Archbishop of Lyon. The county prospers due to its excellent soil and fortunate location at the junction of several trade routes.
