Comments: Mortain, in ancient times a part of Roman Gaul, was incorporated into the Frankish kingdom in the late 5th century. It was constituted as a county within the duchy of Neustria as a result of the raids of the Norsemen, eventually being incorporated into their Duchy of Normandy in the late 9th century, passing later into the hands of the English. It was regained for France by Philip Augustus in the early 13th century. The county is under the religious jurisdiction of the Bishop of Avranches, who is in turn under the Archbishop of Rouen. There is a some commerce in the larger towns, notably Avranches, and the county is quite fertile.
