Prepare Your Army for the Campaign
Once you have raised an army, what you do next depends on your nationality. If you are English, you next step is usually to get your army across the Channel . Unless you are quelling rebellions, fighting the Scots or involved in a civil war, going to France is your next objective.
The French player has a different agenda once an army is formed. You must not attack/engage English armies unless the French outnumber them by 6-1 or better (even then you take a risk). So stay out of their way. Easiest way to do this: set <S>tanding Orders to RETREAT. NEVER change this! The English player, of course, usually welcomes a fight and can set standing orders to "Stand and Fight" if the English army is at least a thousand strong and you are fairly certain that there are no 10,000 strong French armies wandering about.
English players must, however, rely on a steady stream of information about enemy forces in order to make the most of their superior troops. A common mistake is for an English army of under a thousand men (often used to gobble up lightly defended fiefs) to get caught and stomped by a larger French army out looking for these smaller forces. The French soldiers may be inferior to the English ones, but a clever French commander can still cause the English a lot of problems.
